Tomás Alcaide: Centenário do Nascimento 1901/2001

Tomás Alcaide was one of the leading operatic figures in the world in the early years of the 20th century. For this exhibition the Portuguese Intitute of Museums / Music Museum and ETMOZ (Associação Etnográfica e Cultural de Estremoz – the Ethnographical and Cultural Association of Estremoz) joined forces, partners in the important task of evoking one of Portugal’s, indeed the world’s, greatest ever opera singers, at a time when 100 years had elapsed since his birth in the city of Estremoz. The exhibition was on display at the Music Museum and also the Convento das Maltesas (Maltese Convent), in Estremoz. By way of homage to this great tenor, costumes, posters, opera programmes, correspondence, newspaper cuttings and maquettes of opera sets were among the pieces that retraced the course of his life and personality.
