Can visitors photograph the museum and the works on display?
No. However, pictures of items from the Museum’s collection may be requested from the services of the Instituto Português de Museus. Yes. The Museum has ample space for those in wheelchairs to manoeuvre. Access is made possible by means of a stair-lift which moves mechanically up and down a handrail.

Does the Museum have Braille descriptions of display items or indications of the route and plans for the visually handicapped?
No. However, with a view to getting round this situation, guided tours are sometimes arranged to the reserves, where the visually handicapped can have direct access to some of the collection’s instruments. As regards documentation in Braille or otherwise suitable for the visually handicapped, we intend to produce this for some of the temporary exhibitions.

What is necessary to book guided tours of the Museum in advance?
All you need to do is contact the Museum and ask for a booking. The Museum needs to know the date and time of the intended visit, the total number of participants (how many students, teachers and others accompanying), the type of group involved (name of the school, ages, qualifications, interests), the aim of the visit and the name of the person responsible, together with their contacts. Bookings should be made two weeks in advance. It is also possible to make a booking online, subject to confirmation. On the day of the visit, you will need to bring an authenticated credential, indicating the number of students, teachers and others accompanying.

What do I need to do research in the Museum?
If the research implies access to the Museum’s reserves, to consult the collections, then authorisation in advance is needed. The request should be sent to the Museum’s Direction. If, on the other hand, you simply want access to information about music, you only need to visit the Museum’s Documentation Centre during its normal working hours (Mondays to Fridays from 10:00 to 12:30 and from 14:00 to 17:30).

Does the Museum possess technical drawings of the instruments in its collections?
Yes. At the present time there are drawings of two harpsichords, one being the Joaquim José Antunes instrument, a curtal, an eighteenth-century clavichord and the Eichentopf oboe, though others may be added at any time. These drawings may not be consulted without previous authorisation.

What is necessary if I wish to donate an instrument to the Museum?

Just inform us of your wish in a letter to the Museum’s Direction. The text should include as detailed a description as possible of the instrument (maker, place of manufacture, model, series number, state of conservation, quantity ...) and its known history (who it belonged to, restoration ...); it should also be accompanied by photographs. If the instrument is of interest to the Museum, the donor will be asked for the loan of the instrument for further, more detailed analysis. Once its usefulness to the Museum has been confirmed and after approval of its addition to the collection, the process of formal acceptance will be initiated.

How can I obtain the Museum’s publications, recordings, postcards and other products?
By going to the Museum’s shop or ordering online. You can also ask in some other way for the item you want to be sent by post, in which case delivery is only possible on receipt of a postal order for the value of the product + postage and packing. Note that some items are available from bookshops, record shops and the shop belonging to the Instituto dos Museums e da Conservação at the Palácio Foz in Lisboa (open Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 19:00) or even at shops of other museums.

How can I find out about an instrument that I have?
The Museum can help by doing a scientific description of the piece: dating, materials used, importance in organological and historical terms (the Museum does not do commercial valuations). For this you just need to contact us and explain your case.
